MediaTek was the top brand in the first quarter of the smartphone chip market. The Taiwan-based chip maker has topped the list for seven consecutive quarters. According to a recent report by Counterpoint Research, MediaTek accounted for 36% of the global smartphone chip market in the January-March quarter. Qualcomm is in second place with 30 percent share. Apple, which is in the third place, has 15 percent share. In addition, Unisk, Samsung and High Silicon, which are in the fourth, fifth and sixth place, have 11, 5 and 1 percent market share respectively.
MediaTek has a strong position in the mid-priced smartphone market with the DimensionT600 and DimensionT900 series. They have also achieved 20 percent growth in sales of FiveG chips. Besides, the Taiwan-based company has also made good income from the high-end market with the Dimension 9000 series.
MediaTek's smartphone chip sales in the United States have grown significantly over the past year. In April 2021, MediaTek accounted for 30 percent of the US smartphone chip market. At the time, Qualcomm's share was 6 percent, more than double that of MediaTek. But within a year, MediaTek's share has risen to 45 percent. If this trend continues, MediaTek could soon overtake Qualcomm in markets like the United States. A number of factors have contributed to the unprecedented success of the US market over the past year. MediaTek has provided chips for Samsung's Galaxy A12 and Galaxy A32 FiveG phones. Collectively, the two smartphones have sold 9 million units. The Taiwan-based company has also received orders to supply chips to Samsung Galaxy A03S, Galaxy A13 FiveG, Moto G Pure and Moto G Power phones.
Qualcomm still tops the chip supply for Android phones priced at more than 800. With the emphasis on the premium Android market, their share in the low-priced smartphone segment in the US has dropped to 250. However, the company based in San Diego, California has a strong position in the premium and mid-priced Android segment priced at ৮ 250-600. Qualcomm had a 93 percent share of the global Android market, which was priced at 800 or more in April. They also had a 74 percent stake in the থেকে 250 to 600 Android segment. Qualcomm has a strong position in this segment with strong sales of Galaxy S22 series with Snapdragon chipset.
Qualcomm has been pushing for the production of premium and FiveG chipsets in recent years. In this, companies like MediaTek and UNESCO are taking a good position in the affordable segment. MediaTech's growth in the budget segment is enviable, said Jeff Fieldhack, research director at Counterpoint Research. They are now focusing on the US medium and premium segment.
Analysts say MediaTek will do well in the US mid- to high-end smartphone market with the recently unveiled Dimension 1050 FiveG millimeter-wave chip.
MediaTek is expected to have a strong position in the flagship and sub-flagship market with Dimensionity 9000 series and Dimensionity 6000 series. MediaTek's market will expand in the flagship segment as well as dominate the affordable and mid-priced smartphone market.
